How to Let Yourself Heal After Loss, Heartbreak or Hard Times
By Daniel De La Cruz · Adapted from Memoirs of a Happy Psycho, Chapter 40, Letting Yourself Heal, and Chapter 47, Accept the Unacceptable
One of the biggest problems we face is that we don’t let good things happen for us as easily as we let bad things happen to us. Your body is always trying to make you better. Your mind, as much as it might haunt you, also wants to be healthy. A lot of the time, we’re the ones fighting it.
Watch your words
I once had an anxiety episode that lasted six months. It took forgetting what the anxiety felt like for me to feel better. Every time I remembered it, I was back under the curse. Your words have the power to convince you of things. The same way they can make you sick, they can make you well. Use them on purpose.
Name what you’re healing from
Half of letting yourself heal is knowing what to heal from. You’ll never heal if you can’t properly name it. Heal from anything that makes you feel like less of a person, or makes you feel you deserve to be treated in ways you should never allow. If you can’t tell, ask yourself this: if your son or daughter were going through what you’re going through, what would you tell them to do? Then do that.
Accept it, so it stops victimizing you
Accepting something doesn’t mean it was okay. It means you know it happened, and you refuse to let it keep ruining your life. Acknowledge it, learn from it if you can, and let go. Then stay busy enough to let the healing happen.
No false pleasures
Using a substance to hide from what hurts is not letting yourself heal. The hurt is still there when you wake up, plus a new one. Nothing in the history of anything will ever completely destroy all your future happiness. It only feels that way because we don’t yet have the understanding we need to move forward, and that understanding takes time.
Prevent a round two
Healing is your chance to protect yourself from whatever hurt you in the first place. Your new guard isn’t a prison that keeps good people out. It’s an energy you carry that thins out the wrong ones. Letting yourself heal begins with you, and it ends with you.
